When my son was four years old, his first pet was a chestnut-colored Abyssinian guinea pig who was named Theodore because of his resemblance to a teddy bear. Like the guinea pig in these poems, the real Theodore was highly vocal and wootzed loudly if his name was called anywhere in the house (or if anyone mentioned the word "lettuce").
The actual Theodore never disappeared like his namesake in the book, but another guinea pig, belonging to my son's friend Jode, did vanish and reappear, as did our pet rabbit, Beauregard, when he was very young.
If you would like to tell me about your favorite pet, why don't you enter the Kids Can Write contest and send me a poem about him or her?
