This should be pretty much all the roller rinks in Alaska. ==== Adak, AK Adak Naval Station Adak is located in the western Aleutian Islands about 3 hours flying time from Anchorage. Military - Restricted There a roller rink located in the Naval Station, however it may currently be closed due to cutbacks in the base staffing level and relocation of all dependents off-island. Admission to the island is restricted to military personell and civilian contractors. ==== Anchorage, AK 99518-3364 Diamond Skateland 8100 Homer Drive Diamond Skateland is located south of Anchorage just off of Alaska Rt 1, between the Tudor Road and Dowling Road Interchanges. 907-349-8825 RSA Member Rink ==== Anchorage, AK 99504-1703 Royal Roller Rink 6411 Debarr Road The Royal Roller Rink is located west of Anchorage along Debarr Road between Boniface Parkway and Muldoon Road. 907-333-1413 Tues 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Homeschool Session (1st, 3rd & 5th) RSA Member Rink USAC/RS Artistic, Hockey and JO Clubs [ web gleanings ] The Eagle River/Chugiak Homeschool Association sponsers a roller skating session on the First, third and fifth Tuesdays of every month at the Royal Roller Rink. ==== Barrow, AK 99723 Fred Ipalook Elementary School ? Barrow is located on the Alaskan North Slope, by Point Barrow in the Chugaki/Beaufort Sea, the most northern point in the US. The school is somewhere in town on the lagoon shore. 907-852-4025(city) Wood Floor In-Line Skates permitted and available for rent The Barrow recreation department opened the old Ipalook Elementary School gymnasium as a roller rink over the 1996 Christmas Holidays, and plans to open the facility on a permanent basis in February, after hockey boards, a sound system and disco lighting is installed. Apparently they built a larger "indoor playground" making the gym available for other uses. According to the article, in-line skating has become popular in Barrow, even though most of the streets are only paved with gravel. The trial run of the facility proved popular, giving kids that got in-lines for Christmas a place to try them out, though quad and in-line rental were also available. Apparently the program is a general recreation program, not aimed speicifally at elementary school kids. ==== Eagle River/Chugiak, AK 99577-8065 Skate Station 10901 Mausel Street Eagle River is about 25 miles north of Anchorage along Akasaka Rt 1. The rink is on Mausel Street, just off of Artillery Road on the west side of Rt 1. 907-694-7657 USAC/RS Artstic, JO and Speed Clubs ==== King Cove, AK 99571 King Cove Community Center King Cove is located near the tip of the Alaska Penninsula, leading out towards the Aleutian Islands. 907-497-2483(cc) [ web gleanings ] An Anchorage engineering firm mentions working on a Roller Rink and Community Center in King Cove. This is probably a regional community center for the area. ==== North Pole, AK 99705-5743 Polar Roller 1087 Dennis Road North Pole is about 15 miles southeast of Fairbanks along Alaska Rt 2. Polar Roller is actually about midway betwen Fairbanks and North Pole. 907-488-4475 RSA Member Rink ==== Soldonia, AK 99669-7938 Alaska's Great Skate 44619 Sterling Highway Soldonia is located out on the Kenai Penninsula about 125 miles southwest of Anchorage. The rink should be along Alaska Rt 1 south of Soldinia near the Kenai River bridge. 907-262-9880 ==== Unalaska, AK 99685 Unalaska Roller Rink ? Unalaska is located at about the mid-point of the Aleutian Island chain, at Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island. 907-581-1960(town) This is probably a municipal/regional recreation center. ======================================================================== ======================================================================== Hawaii (808) - All Areas [ tony@mpg.phys.hawaii.edu (Antonio Querubin) ] There are supposed to be some [outdoor?] public mini roller skating rinks somewhere around Honolulu but I don't know where they are. If you're in the military, Hickam AFB and Schofield Barracks also have roller skating rinks. I don't know if there are any roller skating rinks on the outer islands. [grr] There is nothing currently listed in the Hawaii phone books that even smells like a roller rink, though there is an ice rink in Honolulu - The Ice Palace at 4151 Salt Lake Boulevard, and also various outdoor skating opportunties. The military bases are also the sites for some outdoor roller hockey tournaments. There is one surviving USAC/RS Artistic club in Kahului on Maui, from what I understand, they use a multi-function "Family Life Center" at a local church as a rink. ==== Hilo/Hawaii, HI 96720-5107 Moons In Line Hockey Arena 30 Makaala Street 808-934-7825 ======================================================================== ======================================================================== Idaho (208) - All Areas Data based on CD-ROM phone directory searches, with obvious ice rinks and those listed in the Skaters Edge ice skating rink directory deleted, also checked against RSA directory, 1995 USAC/RS directory and NIYP 2/96. The rink is on Pioneer Drive, which runs parallel to US 95 near the intersection of US 95 and Dalton Avenue. 208-772-9803/772-9507 Wood Floor - Medium Size In-line Skates Permitted RSA Member Rink USAC/RS Artistic and JO Clubs Sun 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM Adult 18+ Session [ sbeckstrom@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - edited ] I did not skate here, but did go in and take a look around. Apparently, it's owned by a partnership with many members and they are intersted in cashing in on the investnmet. The city declined, saying that such operations were better off in private hands. As far as I know, it's still operating, under the same ownership. It is the only large rink in the area between Portland and Eugene. [ web gleanings ] Recent improvements for roller hockey at Skate Palace include regulation roller hockey markings placed on the floor. I can't imagine them playing things you can't dance to, although maybe pipe organ music may be a bit much if that is ALL they play. I don't remember, but it wasn't that crowded and I was able to practice my spins even though they didn't allow me to practice any jumps. [ merlyn@techbook.com (Randal Schwartz) ] Oaks is still there. It'd better be. It's the oldest and largest rink in the Pacific Northwest (since 1920-something, I think). They still play the old pipe organ (the pipes hang over the center of the rink) on some sessions, but Friday and Saturday nights are top-40 from records (and maybe CDs). I attend a "private" session there on Sunday nights which is mostly rap-ified soul (and some good stuff too :-). It's run by a private group (the "Rose City Rhythm Rollers") and it's for members only, so we can pretty much play what we want (well, OK, what the DJ wants :-). [ this 10 PM Sunday private seesion is still happening, though the ] [ group may currently be called the Cross Cultural Rhythm Rollers ] [ grr@tharsis.com ] If you're in Portland or even Seattle, don't miss this gem. As mentioned above, this rink has a real Wurlitzer amusement park/theater pipe organ, with the pipes, drums, bells, etc suspended out over the center of the floor. The organ is played Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday nights. Jerry Jorgensen is the main organist, though I think there are one of two other folks that play from time to time. Thursday is the official "adult night", but Sunday night seemed to be mostly artistic skaters with a few randoms thrown in. The floor is also quite amazing - it's large, with the boards wrapped around the oval for an extremly smooth rolling surface and is kept in very good condition. There's also a separate strip across the rear of the rink with a fun- house style wavy surface, just the thing for practicing your 3-turns and backwards edges. There is also a very tiny square practice floor alongside the main floor. An interesting feature of the rink is that the park is located on the flood plain of the Willamette River and it does get flooded out now and then, such as the winter of 1995/96. The floor of the rink is acutally set up as a raft, buoyed by some 250 55-gallon drums. When the river rises, the floor is cut loose from the building and floats above the surface until the water falls again. After that, it's just a matter of cleaning out the muck in the surrounding areas. Oaks Park dates back to 1905, though the roller rink building was apparently built in the 1920's, with the current floor dating to 1948. As an amusement park, Oaks is really rather modest, with mostly carnival class semi-portable rides. The antiquity seems to be mostly in the the rink, dance hall and a kiddy theatre, no big roller coaster or carousel. However, area residents are quite fond of The Oaks as a park, picnic and recreation area and it is now owned by a non-profit preservation corporation, with plans to add a wooden roller coaster. A huge wood floor, in great shape, and a Wurlitzer pipe organ with a terrific organist. I'm trying to figure out how to get back there -- JUST TO GO SKATING!! :-) [ GJorgen980@aol.com (Jerry Jorgensen) - edited ] There are three organists at the Oaks at the present time. I have the honor of being "lead organist" which means I am scheduled to play all the organ music sessions. If I can't play for some reason my first resource is Mr. Keith Fortune. I had the pleasure of being one of his organ teachers in his early years. My other resource is Mr. Gary Russell, the man who taught me everything I know about skating music. Three generations of rink organists in one location! Generally, our organ sessions are limited to skate dance music. With the addition of the World Class dances, that gives me a wider range of tempos to play. Also, I always have my ears open to any new music that might fit into those tempos and rhythms. My wife Melody (that's her name, really) is the real talent in the family and has a fantastic ear for what might be good stuff. I try to follow her advice whenever I can. [ web gleanings ] The Oaks Skating Rink is part of Oaks Ammusement Park, located along the eastern edge of the Willamette River below the Sellwood bridge. Built by the Oregon Water Power and Navigation Company, the Oaks Park its gates on May 30, 1905. In keeping with the design of other "Trolley Parks" across the country, most of its visitors disembarked from trolley cars which ran along the Portland-to-Oregon City tracks forming the eastern boundary of the park. It is one of the oldest continuously operating amusement parks in the America. In the spring of 1925, Edward H. Bollinger purchased the operating company, then in 1943 he purchased the 44 acre park property from the Portland Electric Power Company. Ownership passed to his son Robert in 1949, who continued to operate the park until January 1, 1985, at which time he donated The Oaks to a non-profit corporation he had formed to perpetuate the park. The rink is home to three interactive clubs, speed, artistic, and our junior olympic club. We have ten USAC/RS certified artistic coaches and two speed coaches, who can provide expertise in the art of Roller Skating through private lessons or classes. Please seek any one of these coaches out if you have questions about competition skating, test skating, or skating for exercise and fun. The floor is of wood construction with a size of 100' x 200', which is large by most standards. It is maintained meticulously and is in excellent condition. Each year in June, Oaks Park hosts the Northwestern Regional competition. We have many activities during our weekly sessions for all to enjoy. Come and celebrate a birthday with us or book a private party for a large group of friends. Live organ music is played during some of our scheduled weekly sessions and also during our regional competition. As a plus, it is open throughout mall hours 7 days/week, as a minus it's a family entertainment rink, aka for the kids. Admittedly, this is a trait shared by all Utah rinks, the other rink I visited was even worse. The floor, supposedly Utah's largest, is some kind of blue plastic over a plywood or similar base. It was smooth, but seemed pretty slow, especially with the tattered rental skates available. Skating at dinner time provided a fairly quiet, uncrowded session tending towards more kids as the evening wore on. Late Sunday afternoon was also rather quiet, with less than a dozen people sharing the rink. The rink has sort of a stage at one end and is apparently also used as a concert/show venue at times. Apparently the folks behind the Galleria had hoped to make this a chain of recreation centers. They opened another facility, also with a roller rink, by the same name at the Franklin Mills Mall, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but that one failed and the company went though bankruptcy proceedings. The problem there was that instead of providing a place for shoppers and families to drop off their kids, it gained a reputation as a hangout for teenaged mall-rats. I suspect that the bottom line was that mall real-estate, even in an "outlet mall", requires really high volumes and free spending to cover the overhead, the general idea has worked well in other places. [ litlnemo@slumberland.com (Wendi Dunlap) - edited some] Several of us were looking for evening sessions so that we could start going skating at least once a week. I used to take artistic roller skating lessons (and also a bit of ice skating lessons), and I want to get back into skating. However, weekend evening sessions are, in my experience, impossible -- they are so crowded that there is no room to do any skating. So we were looking for a weeknight - Only one rink, Skate King in Bellevue, had a session on Thursday nights an adult session for 18 and over. so we decided to go there. We went to Skate King for several weeks in a row -- and it was pretty bad, so I don't know if we'll be going back. Why was it bad? Well, it was VERY unfriendly to beginning skaters. I'm not a beginner, but many of my friends who were with me are, and they were afraid to go out on the floor much of the time. The emphasis on Thursday nights seems to be on the "roller disco" sort of skating that everyone was doing back in 1980. :) The rink is full of people skating as fast as possible, doing little dance steps all the way along, and weaving around all those going slower than they are. Those who aren't skating fast are skating in groups of four or more, gabbing with each other and not watching their surroundings. Certain people there go so fast that they are unable to get around other skaters without grabbing them hard by the shoulder and pushing them out of the way. Both my friend Shari and I had bruises on our shoulders from one particular guy who grabbed our shoulders at two different times one evening. I didn't really think it was a roller derby session, but after that I wasn't so sure... This particular skater commits skating violations that would have gotten him busted by the floor guard at any other rink I've ever attended, but not this one. We overheard a beginning skater complain to the management that there was no room for slower skaters out there, and the rink manager said, "Well, this is an ADULT session. It's not for beginners." As if adults never learn to skate? He recommended that the beginner come on a weekend, and she said she had tried that but that there were too many tiny kids and no room to move. The rink guy shrugged. What kind of attitude is this, I ask you? Hmph. Also, the rink floor is dirty and in bad shape - there's a nice big crack in it, and it's bumpy. The music was poorly chosen (4 Janet Jackson and 2 Madonna songs in one evening) -- come on, let's have some variety! And, of course, requests were ignored. [ I've included pretty much the whole rant, less some ice skating stuff ] [ Some of what she describes scares me - this doens't sound like a very ] [ well run rink - but other things make it sould like my kind of rink! ] [ mauro@george.ee.washington.edu (Mauro Costa) - edited ] I understand her [Wendy] frustration with the rink she mentioned, but I still think it is an ok rink, if you are not a beginner. I go there myself when school is not in session. [ sbeckstrom@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - edited ] Skate King is a rink to the east of Seattle in Bellevue, and is really nice. It's well lighted, with a somewhat small, blue plastic floor. The floor is currently in the process of being stripped, and so the rink will be shut down from July 29-August 5 [1996] for refinishing the floor. However, the size of the floor is made up for by the ambiance of the crowd. I normally skate here on Saturday afternoons and Sunday evenings. As the summer has begun, these sessions are thinning out. They still play the Hokey Pokey and other games like "Four Corners", "Red Light, Green Light" and they have races, backward skates, and reverse skates. The music is enjoyable, although they tend to play too much "hip hop, fast paced music" which can get to be a bit too much for beginners. This rink is solely a skating rink, with no artistic, speed, or hockey clubs - it's just a normal session rink. The floor is fairly clean and nice to skate on. There are no figure circles marked. They have an adult night on Thursdays which is quite fast paced, but no organ music or artistic sessions. As previously mentioned, Sunday night is mostly compromised of a select group of adults and a smattering of a few others, and the camraderie is good. Some of the other weekend sessions can be quite packed. At the end of the rink, there's a mural of Seattle, complete with the Space Needle and the Kingdome. What is really interesting is that on the right hand side of the far end of the rink, there's a "skate car" that looks street driveable! I'd love to ask them if they'd sell it! [ sbeckstrom@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - update ] This rink just had a new floor put down last week [9/96] It's blue plastic and very nice, although it's getting some scuff marks as the teenagers are doing hockey stops and marking up the floor. Also new carpeting as of two days ago. They have a fast Thursday night adult skate and a new Sunday night R&B session (starts Sept. 29). Sunday evenings are a nice night to skate here, not too crowded. The music is mainly Top-40. [ grr ] According to a January 1997 Seattle Times article there a Saturday night Christian Music night, sponsored by the Holy Rollin' Ministries, at the Skate King that has now been running for 11 years. The evening draws as many as 400 kids, teens and parents. The event started during the hard times in the mid-80's, when a group apprached the owner with the proposal for a Christan night and has been popular enough to hold the time slot ever since. The rink also has a monthly Monday night gay skating event sponsored by a local bar. Skate King also just happens to have a sushi-bar/Japanese restaurant, Sushi-Ten Hama located "in their parking lot". The floor is basically very clean, and they also have a very small surface outside for skating, which is open in the summer months. The have normal session times and the sessions are normally pretty crowded, with many teenagers, so the floor can be pretty unforgiving at times. They have a metal detector in the lobby - the neighborhood is pretty rough, though it doesn't look like it. I've only skated there on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. This past winter [1996], they had an adult dance night on Mondays, and I am unsure if that is still going strong. They do have figure circles and also a "jump harness" for freestyle skaters. There is an artistic club, but it's mainly for the younger skaters. The coach doesn't teach adults - prejudice! - so I kind of have mixed feelings about this rink. ==== Federal Way/Seattle, WA 98003-6880 Pattison's West Skating Center 34222 Pacific Highway South at 342nd Street Federal Way is about 20 miles south of Seattle. Hughes had started on the rink some years ago, but the building was used for RV and boat storage until recently. It is 15,000 sq.ft. with an expoy finished floor, and is convertible to serve as a roller hockey rink, indoor soccer field or volleyball courts and can also serve as a dance floor for local youths. The decor is 50's motif and includes some salvaged materials from the old Coliseum in Spokane. Hughes basically says there is nothing for people to do in the area, without driving to Spokane or Cour d'Alene and he's glad to be back in the family tradition. The rink currently hosts adult and youth hockey leagues. ==== Prosser, WA 99350 Bennett Roller Rink 602 7th Street 509-786-3515/786-9996 RSA Member Rink ==== Richland, WA 99352 Rollarena Skating Center 849 Stevens Drive 509-946-6971 RSA Member Rink ==== Soap Lake, WA 98851 Lakeview Roller Skating Center 148 Road 18.5 NE Soap Lake is located in eastern Washington, northest of Ephrata.
