They play a variety of music - some rock, alternative, country, pop, etc. They offer special christian, and country music skate nights so those people can come then. It is so big! There is tons of floor space, and the floor grips good. The snack bar offers some decent stuff, that isn't priced high. So if you are ever in the area and want to stop in just track them down, it will be worth your trip! Anne Seaman mangages the Rollerland side of the businees, while her brothers manage the newly completed [1/96] ice rink nearby. Their father Leo, passed away in 1993. Leo's Rollerland has the biggest skate floor I have encountered. It measures approximaely 280 feet by 210 feet. It is a coated concrete surface and has few, if any, blemishes. Anne said they wanted to resurface soon, but I personnally did not have any traction problems. The only problem I had was the corners are so wide, I had to adjust my cross-step so not to turn to sharply - this is an obstacle I liked. In-line skates are permitted and at the relatively slow Thursday evening session I attended, it was mixed about 50/50 between quads and in-lines. They have a full snack bar, electronic games, and a well stocked Pro Shop. There is plenty of space for eating or visiting. Both birthday parties and private parties are welcome. Leo's is open every day, except Monday. New Mexico is tough because the rinks here don't know we exist and they are geared for the younger set. I am 53, my husbank is 61 and we just started skating again and we are having the time of our lives. It is large, official Hockey size and flat. I did not find a single flaw in the wood slats, and I looked very hard. The owner said something about the sub-floor was the secret, but I am not qualified to comment in detail. The bottom line is this is a great skate surface. Skate America is owned by Bob Webb and his wife and is typical of family owned rinks throughout America. It is clean, with the staff focused on the kids having a good time. They have a skate shop, snack bar, game room, and plenty of party space. During the week, it is also a daycare center, with kids segregated by age. Birthday parties are available by reservation, with private rooms for each party. No artistic program is available, but the floor provides plenty of room for practice during the sessions. Friday night is mostly teens and kids, but Saturday is for the famaily and adults, with a golden oldies night. Tuesday night is hockey night. Skates are available for purchase, with the staff knowledgeable about various combinations and costs. They rent skates, quad, speed, and in-lines. The main floor is uncoated wood, 182'x82'. It is pretty smooth, but will seem slippery for anyone used to a plastic coated floor. It is supposed to receive a platic coating over the July 4th weekend. The floor is swept and monitored by rink staff and artistic club skaters. The second floor is plastic coated, 25'x9', just large enough for some figure circles. The main floor is slightly depressed from a carpeted surround. The skate shop has only a few items on hand but several catalogs to order from. There is a full service snack bar with the usual pizza, hot dogs, pretzels, and popcorn. NO SMOKING! There are a few games that are moving soon to a separate game room. There aren't any adult-only sessions per se but many times the weeknight sessions are only adults. The music ranges from classical, rock, country, and (when we can get away with it) artistic dance music. The only session with musical restrictions is the Tuesday evening Christian music session. There is artistic club practice time most evenings from 5:00 or 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM and also Saturday Morning. There are also pickup roller hockey games several evenings per week. My only big frustration is getting through the parking lot once the bingo parlor in the shopping center opens. The light show adds to the fun, with the kids skating from spot to spot, listening to music from their state of the art sound system. The facility boasts some of the best game room equipment I have seen, using the coupon method of redemption. You can also take a break in an extra large eating area with Hamburgers and other sandwiches available at the full grill. An innovation not seen anywhere else is the private rink reserved exclusively for parties. This is a great idea, if you have the room, and they do, for extra large crowds, and for any group wishing not to share their good times. This rink is smaller than the public rink, but still large enough to have a good time. Another good idea is the "privacy" area located on the second floor, overlooking the public rink. This is good for any non-skating person, who wants to keep up with their kids, but would rather read than listen to the music. Their specialty is Hockey, with many leagues and age groups. The coaching I observed was attentive and positive. There is pick-up hockey for 16 and older on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Not as much dance music as I'd like, though there is some every night. A lot of the crowd seems to favor classic rock, but everything is played. [ SCOOPWOOD@aol.com (Scott Coopwood) - edited ] The floor was the wood and in good shape, at a rough guess 180'x90'. It needs a new coat of Roll-On, but most I skate on do. No rough spots, and only a hint of "clacking" sound around the corners. One interesting feature was the 3-foot high cinder block retaining wall around the rink. I bet no one gets through it, and only over it if necessary. The crowd was mixed, and all over 18. A few in the forties, but most 18-25. The total crowd was only around 30, which they say is typical most nights. Snack bar was adequate, but not staffed full time and the Pro shop was not open. This is a nice little rink and their adult session on Thursday nights is a lot of fun, and attracts good skaters - I recommend it. From downtown, head north on Rt 1 and get off at the Rt 183 - Research Boulevard exit, then head southeast on Rt 183, across the MoPac railroad tracks and about a half mile further to McCann drive. Turn right onto McCann and Playland is about a block down, behind a Nissan auto dealership. Planned There are plans to create a municipal recreation and entertainment in center in the predominately black Eastside Austin area to provide a secure area for children and help keep children separate from street crime. The planned $9.6 million community center would include a bowling alley, roller skating rink, movie theater, performance theater, video game area and food court. In June 1996, the Austin city council had approved the funding, but the future of the planned center was still unclear. Proponents see it as vital a community service and area revitalization, opponents claim that it's a thinly disguised plan to divert federal low-income housing funds to the immediate commercial and political interests of some of the proponents and that the plan would generate on-going red ink for the city. More recent news reports seem to indicate things are moving along, with the hiring of a management firm and planned opening in the Winter 1997/1998 timeframe. The times I've been there they've played top 40 music, but I believe they have *adult* nites and Christian nites. The floor is wood, a little small, but set up very much like the Skate 3 rink in Tyngsboro MA, though the floor is a natural wood color and a whole lot smoother than Tyngsboro. The crowd is generally not very big, and most of the times I've been there the floor has also been reasonably clean, though at least once that I was there I left after 40 minutes because it was so cruddy.
