There are also several private party rooms available to rent. The music is mostly club dance and hip-hop, but with a few slow numbers thrown in for good measure. There are some talented skaters at this rink, with most involved in a trucking style of skating. Skate guards are on duty during public sessions. It is blue plastic over masonite sheets, but is resurfaced annually. The snack bar and other sitting areas are usually very clean with plenty of seats for the non-skaters. The rink is very popular for kids parties - about nine party rooms with the visiting roller skating dinosaurs. The crowds are usually well mannered. Some of the Saturday morning party sessions can get pretty crowded with many young, inexperienced skaters, but should not cause any concern for any decent skater. The late night sessions usually have less kids, no organ music - just top-40, dance music and country sometimes. There is a deputy on duty for the busy Friday and Saturday evening session. They have regular and speed skating lessons available. Not many bad points for Dreamland. Since the closure of the Coral Springs Skate Center indoor rink, city officials have organised weekened public skating nights at the outdoor rink with music and games. There are also youth hockey leagues at the rink, but local adults hockey players are complaining that they can't get time at the facility. They have a Gospel Night, Soul Night and a Gay Night that been running for 30 years. As far as I can tell, the case is actually the the Bonaventure resort is associated with the Bonaventure planned community and in addition to the resort's recreational facilities, the guests also have access to the Bonaventure Town Center Club, with it's roller rink, bowling alley and other indoor sports facilities. The Town Center Club itself is a 67,000 sq.ft. facility that operates as a members only club restricted to Bonaventure residents. Some are required to pay as part of condo fees or deed restrictions and there are over 4,000 member families with an estimated 10,000 people now eligible to use the facilities. Over time the Town Center Club has evolved to include local government offices, a theatre, a pool, volley ball courts, a gym, and the bowling alley and roller rink. There are also meeting rooms that are used for a variety of club activities, classes and meetings. The larger rink has a scoreboard, hockey boards, all are probably asphalt surfaced. There was community opposition to the noise created by hockey play at the rink and the park agreed to disconnect noisemakers from the scoreboard and eventually move the rink further from the developed areas adjancent to the park. According to a January 1995 newspaper article in the Miami papar they were doing a near-capacity crowd on weekends. They are open every day, with a special theme for each evening and they also have afternoon matinees! The rink owners are described as taking strong measure to prevent the enroachment of the gang problems that led to the closing of most area roller rinks in the mid-80's. The employ off-duty police officers as security guards, enforce a dress code that prohibits hats, bandanas and other gang identifications and check patrons with a hand-held metal detector at the entrance. They have a large wood floor, which is pretty smooth, although there are a couple of bumps along the edge, and is kept very clean. They have a pro-shop and a concession area. The rink is air-conditioned and there is no smoking permitted in the building! They have several adult oriented sessions. Sunday night is a Ladies Discount session, for ages 21 and over, while the Thursday session is for ages 18 and up. Both of these sessions have a variety of music for the first half of the session and then are mostly Rap after 10 PM. The Friday night Late Skate is hosted by Diane Dabney, who rents the rink every week for this session. The music selection is mostly R&B and oldies, with some Jazz. While there is no posted age limit, this is a session intended for adult skaters and the cashier will not admit anyone under 18. Golden Glide is the BEST rink in Georgia, wth friendly patrons, and is a meeting place for the adult skaters from surrounding states. The owners allow the patrons to publicize info on skating parties at rinks in other states, and to organize skating trips from Golden Glide to other rinks. It is a good contact point to connect with the happenings at other rinks and in other states. Over the Labor Day weekend, I assisted John Perkins in holding a special all night skating party we called the Skate-A-Thon. The event was very successful, more than 1000 skaters from 22 states attended this year, and we will make it an annual event. The music theme was classic R&B, soul, oldies and a very little Rap. We included a "Skate Off" with one record for each state represented, so that skaters from that state could show off their different styles. Platic over Concrete Snack Bar - Game Room In-line Skates permitted subject to inspection and avilable for rent According to a number of articles in the local Columbus newspaper, the Lambert Skate Center opened in December 1995, after a $1.2 million rennovation of a building that was built as a rink in the 70's, closed and then served as a Country night club for the last several years. The rink is owned by Eddie and Lisa Lambert of Opelika who own another the Battles-Lambert rink in Auburn and managed by Bill Hoefler. The skating floor is concrete with a urethane coating. There is a game area with mostly redemption games and a snack bar. According to Hoefler the rink is intended as an activity center mostly for kids 15 and under, and not as a teen hangout, with well structured activites and rules that are plain and easy to understand. They have an adult skate on Thursday morning for a couple hours which is what I tried. It may have been just that week because kids were out of school but I got my eardrums busted. The floor is just ok now, and they must have had some artistic skating once because there are figure circles. I can't recommend it, except as a last resort place to keep rolling. In the small world of on-line forums I've since "met" KathyGA who as it turns out skates and teaches here. After some email messages I got to meet her in person and skate at the rink some more. There is some artistic skating there after all but the management seems to want to keep it a secret. Kathy teaches figures, speed and a little dance and has practice time almost every day. There is another lady who's name I have forgotten who teachs dance. My original description of the floor is accurate but when the kids are not there the music can be whatever the instructor wants. They strive to provide a fun, good natured, but disciplined atmosphere, without fighting or ugly talk. The owners hope to see their business grow with the growing popularity of in-line skating. They have hosted and adult roller hockey league for several years and recently established a youth league. Although it's a "mom & pop" operation, the Skelly's say that they run the rink more as a sevice to the community than to make a bunch of money.
