This should be essentially all the roller rinks in the 602 area code. ==== Chandler/Phoenix Metro, AZ 85224-3555 Chandler Sports Spectrum (was Skate World East?) 1101 West Ray Road Chandler is located in central Arizona about 15 miles southeast of Phoenix. From Phoenix, head southeast on I-10 and get off at the Chandler Boulevard exit. Head east on Chandler for about 5 miles, then turn left onto Alma School Road. The rink should be on the right hand side partway down the block. 602-917-8634 Hockey Sport Court - Dasher Boards This is a some kind multi-sport facility with soccer and in-line hockey, though it appears that they may also operate as a conventional roller rink. [ web gleanings ] The Chandler Sports Spectrum is a state-of-the-art roller hockey facility located. The rink features a Sport Court surface and a Strut Wall System. The Sports Spectrum was home to the Phoenix Cobras professional roller hockey team for the 1995 season. Boyd Sutton, the Cobras 1994 MVP, is the hockey pro at the Spectrum. ==== Glendale/Phoenix Metro, AZ 85302-2718 The Great Skate 10054 North 43rd Avenue Glendale is located in central Arizona, about 10 miles northwest of Phoenix. From Phoenix, take US 60 northwest and get off at the Peoria Avenue exit. Head west on Peoria for about 2 miles, then turn left onto 43rd Street. From downtown Phoenix, head north on I-17, get off at the Bell Avenue exit and head east on Bell for about 5 miles, and then turn right onto Cave Creek Road. Head south for almost a mile, then turn left to head east onto Greenway Road. An amateur westling web page mentions that the Phoenix Baptist Church as a "Family Life Center" which includes basketball, raquetball, and tennis facilites, plus a full-size roller rink, along with weight rooms, sauna, steam room and a whirlpool bath. The rink appares to be a large multi-function hall, which also serves as a convention center, but I don't know if they have scheduled roller skating sessions open to the community or just closed activites available through the Chruch. ==== Phoenix, AZ 85033-3136 Rollero Skate Center 7318 West Indian School Road Phoenix is located in central Arizona. Rollero is at the western edge of Phoenix. From downtown, head west on I-10, get off at exit 136 - 75th Avenue and head north for about 2 miles. Wood Floor - Rectangular - Good Shape Snack Bar - Pro Shop [ Dave Klaproth ] The floor is hardwood rectangular in shape; relatively smooth but it has some warped areas (it was originally put down in 1957). it's in good shape considering... The condition as far as grip goes depends on a lot of things. Temperature and humidity naturally have an effect, but also what the ownership cleans the surface with makes a difference. It's usually pretty grippy though. They've got a snack bar and a pro shop, although their prices are a little too high for me. They play a good variety of music; a lot of hip-hop, some rap(ugh), some country and "oldies" from the '70's. It's not the king of rink you'd go to for dance skating. We do mostly speed skating, shuffling, rexxing, that type of thing. ==== Phoenix, AZ 85008-2410 Skate World (aka Hockey on Wheels) 4451 East Oak Street Phoenix is located in central Arizona. Skate World is in the eastern part of Phoenix, near Papaga Park. From downtown, head eastward on Rt 220/217 - The Papaga Freeway, get off at 44th Street and head north for almost a mile, then turn right onto Oak Street. Outdoor Concrete - Small - Smooth [ shooshie@onramp.net (Shooshie) ] There is a recreation center on Indian School at Hayden. It is called the Indian Bend Wash Visitor Center. Large parking lot, big plaza, lots of concrete, stairs of every configuration, walls, jumpable chain fences, concrete-surrounded palm trees at regular intervals for slalom fun, skatable restrooms and water. Up behind it was a big surprise - a small skating rink, about the size of a tennis court, and square. Smooth concrete, with ramped sidewalks all around, stepped edges growing out of an incline from zero to three steps, and a nice view to boot. See the Where-to-Skate section of the in-line FAQ for a description of the outdoor trails and extreme skating possibilites at this location. ==== Sun City/Phoenix Metro, AZ Mountain View Recreation Center Mountainview Road? 602-876-3000(rec dept) Restricted A letter to the editor in a Phoenix newspaper mentiones roller skating as among the activities at the Mountain View Recreation Center in Sun City. Sun City is a planned residential community northwest of Phoenix that has several recreation centers open to residents and many clubs that organize activies at these centers. The roller skating is probably a club activity using one of the facilities, as opposed to any kind of conventional skating rink. ==== Tempe, AZ 85281-1901 The Rink 1120 North McClintock Drive Tempe is located in central Arizona, in the northeast part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. From Phoenix, take I-10 south, then US 60 - The Superstition Freeway, east to the Rt 101 exit. The rink should be near the corner on the left. 602-968-9600 ==== Tempe, AZ 85201 Southwestern Deck Hockey East Apache Boulevard 602-968-5201 Outdoor? Hockey A Pheonix newspaper article mentions that Greg MacLellan built a "roller rink" rink in Tempe which operates Southwestern Deck Hockey. The facility supports both in-line hockey and street/deck hockey. There was a web page about this site, but it seems to have vanished. ======================================================================== Arizona (520) - Outside of Phoenix Metro Area Flagstaff, Kingman, Prescott, Tucson, Sierra Vista, Yuma Phone numbers and addresses checked against a CD-ROM directories 2/96, also checked aginst Nynex Interactive Yellow Pages, the RSA directory and the USAC/RS directory. This should be essentially all the roller rinks in the 520 area code. ==== Bullhead City, AZ 86442-7405 The Bullrink 1370 Riverview Drive Bullhead City is located in western Arizona, along the Colorado River about 30 miles west of Kingman. [ zygmont@U.Arizona.EDU (Bryan J. Zygmont) - edited] The floor at Skate Country East was resurfaced this past summer. I'm not really sure, but it seems to be concrete with an opaque blue type coating on it. I would classify the rink as medium sized, in between the size of Great Skate and Skateland in Pheonix and about the same size as Skate Country North. It's the standard oval shape without any kind of traffic circle. After our matainance guy cleans it with the floor machine it grips very, very well, but towards the end of the week it grips okay. Overall the floor is very smooth - much smoother than at Skate Country North, where the floor seems to have speed bumps in it. In lines are allowed and are available to rent. There is a skate shop, though the prices are on the verge of ridiclous. The snack bar is well stocked with your standard skating rink vittles, also at outrageous prices. There is also a game room, with air hockey and two foosball tables. No smoking is allowed in the building. Most of the music we at the rink could be classified as Top-40. My best friend and I are the two main DJ's and work most of the sessions. The majority of the kids want to hear that kind of stuff, though when we get requests for other kinds of music, we are usually happy to oblige. The Friday and Saturday night Top-40 sessions are the only times where we really put a limit on the number of heavy metal or country requests. ==== Wilcox, AZ 85643-1016 Skateway 900 West Rex Allen Drive Wilcox is in southeastern Arizona, about 70 miles east of Tucson, along I-10. The mural also has black lights that light up when the other lights are down. Banners line the floor at ceiling level. The skate room has a large engraved sign that include representations of St. George and the Dragon. The party room has a long wooden table with a cast iron edge under a large chandelier. The walls have also been painted to look like castle bricks and huge banners cover two walls. The person having a birthday has a throne as their seat. On the rink ceiling there are 50 amber chandeliers, mirror balls, and a whole lot of lights from the disco era. We also have a big screen video system and a fog machine. We are one of the strictest rule enforcers in the Sacramento area. Our employees that skate at other area rinks give us feedback on how we stack up. We are also the only rink in the area to always have a real sheriff's officer to monitor security on both the Friday and Saturday sessions. We really try to run a safe place. Our Friday and Saturday nights are 90% teens, so the music tends to lean to Top-40. Afternoons sessions are generally more family and kid oriented. Sundays and Thursday nights are family nights where the emphasis is on everybody's favorite music. Our morning sessions are adult oriented with a mix of new, old and organ music, and while we don't have an evening adult-only session, the Wednesday night session tends to draw more adults, but there are still kids present. People tell me all the time that Sunrise is one of the cleanest and nicest rink that they have ever seen. After 23 years in business it still looks pretty good. We also just got back from the Gold Skate competition in Bakersfield, where every single entrant from out rink made it into the finals and we ended up winning the production number (among others). [ SBeckstrom@aol.com (Sonya Beckstrom) - edited ] I am surprised that so many skaters that win at regionals come from the Redwood Roller Rink. That floor is horrible AND small!!! [ harbour@rapnet.sanders.lockheed.com (Susan Harbour) - edited ] I too was totally amazed at how teeny it was, and what bad shape the floor was in. When I made my call home to tell my S.O. where I had skated and how things were going, he went wild when I mentioned Redwood City - how many champions - what a reputation... Well, I went back a couple of times, and still never figured it out... I never even saw any of these wonderful skaters skating or anything, but last year, the day we were at Redwood City, there were about 5 different lessons going on - amazing in itself given the floor size - one very nice freestyle lesson and a pretty good pairs lesson as well. [ harbour@rapnet.sanders.lockheed.com (Susan Harbour) - edited ] Redwood is a very old rink. When you approach it, it looks old, in some respects it kind of has that 50's-60's feel to it. I would say that the floor is not larger than 160'x65' or possibly 165'x70'. The thing that makes it feel even smaller is that there are walls on three sides...two of them along the "long" sides of the rink so that there is only a little teeny "off floor" area on the short end of the floor. When I was there three years ago the floor was dinged up really badly. It is wood, probably maple, but very old. Last year when I visited we didn't get to skate on the floor, so I don't really know if it's still in such bad shape. What really slayed me, was that they had added a railing or something along the long sides of the floor, so that it didn't actually go all the way to the walls, making it even smaller! [ satsang@pacbell.net (Jim Miller) - edited ] Yes, it's true that Redwood Roller Rink is small with a crappy floor, but they've had champions for over 30 years. Rink isn't everything. Redwood people go elsewhere as often as they can to skate on larger and better floors. You'd be amazed at how many national champions have come from inferior rinks. The weather is great, actually better in the winter than the summer it seems. There are *tons* of skaters cruising up and down the roads, in-line and quad, as well as skate boards, bicycles, horses - well, okay, only the police. There's a wild dance scene at 6th Ave from noonish until dark. (Bay Area skaters - am I right?) This run has been running for several years and is extremely popualar, drawing as many as 600 skaters in the summer months. The floor is asphalt with a roll-on coating, so it's not a very stable/hard floor. There were a few rather large "speed bumps" right on the figure circles when I was there. The floor is pretty small too, I'd say about 160'x60'. They did have a beginner adult class mid-week sometime, but every time I went there was no coach present to do the class. I haven't been to this rink in about 20 years, and though I remembered that it was small, I must say that it is the smallest rink I have ever seen! Spectator seating is limited to a set of bleachers. The party rooms are small and the snack bar dining area is small. You can't help but strike up conversations while waiting in the snack bar line, as you are practically standing over some of the diners! The wooden floor is a well kept, smooth, but dull in appearance. There are figure circles, with some loop figures, crammed in wherever possible. I tried to fit a dance pattern in, but the small size of the floor was a real problem, though 20 years ago, I remember people doing dances on that floor. I went on a "school break" daytime session over the Holidays, and with the small size of the floor, it didn't take many kids to fill it up. They did have a unique feature: at the end of the session, birthday kids were treated to a ride in a car (non-motorized) shaped like a skate. The have an USAC artistic club and also Hockey. No air-conditioning, but it's not needed in that climate anyway. The skate shop is well stocked, mostly with in-line parts. The place shows a lot of care, and the only drawback is the small size. ==== Oxnard, CA 93030-1134 Roller Gardens 2731 Buckaroo Avenue Oxnard is located on the Pacific Coast, about 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Fussell) - heavily edited ] My favorite is Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale: it is close, has a large enough rink, and has nice skaters/management. Wednesday evening is a dance session with organ music, open to everyone, but has a lot of dance-pairs, and about 20 minutes of organized dances. Sunday evening is Gay night, open to anyone (who doesn't mind the couples, and a couple dances you might not want to join). I've never been, but I know straight people who do go. Wednesday and Friday afternoons are "kids" sessions, but is not at all crowded, so ideal for "fancy skating". [ grr@tharsis.com ] This is a nice classic rink, with a wood floor that's in great condition except for a few minor ripples near the wall by the DJ booth. While traveling on business, I dropped in on the annual Halloween party. There was a small but friendly crowd. It was mentioned that there was usually a larger crowd for the Organ sessions than when I was there, and someone also recommended the Monday night session for DJ type music and backwards skating. This rink is also the home of Rinx Records (818-848-4161), a skating music mail-order house currently operated by Dominic Cangelosi. Dominic also plays the organ and is the owner of the rink, not to mention being one hell of a nice guy... [ snowden@ix.netcom.com (Dave Snowden) - edited ] Moonlight is Owned and operated by Dominic, of Rinx Records fame. Dominic gets behind his Hammond Organ and plays for the Tuesday Night Rexxing Session and the Wednesday Night Artistic Dance Session!!! Dominic keeps the rink very clean and is always spiffing up the interior and exterior!!! There is a very active Artistic Club and opportunities to take skating achievement Tests. Birthday Parties during sessions and private parties are very numerous. There are sometimes additional sessions at other times, mainly during Holidays and for special groups. Rinx Records is also housed at the rink and records, tapes and CDs may be purchased/ordered during the daytime from 9 AM to 4 PM and on Tuesday and Wednesday nights during the session times. [ JSKOGA@CSUPOMONA.EDU (James S. Koga) - edited ] After all this time, my partner and I finally made it to Wednesday night dance (organ music) public session the Moonlight Rollerway. First of all, the rink itself is beautiful - from the spotless parking lot lit up as bright as day, to the sparkling wooden skating floor, the place just bespeaks pride of ownership. One really unique feature of that rink - there are light up signs for "All Skate", "Couples" etc., which is rare enough these days, but there are als light up signs for "Forward Rexxing" and "Backward Rexxing". The visit was an immersion into another culture. At our rink, we are basically it for dance skaters. At the start of the session, Dave Snowden was the only person we knew, but by the time we left, several people had struck up conversations with us and introduced themselves. My partner was a little nervous when it came to sharing the floor with such advanced dancers - with some of the border patterns, it was hard to tell where they were headed. We were the only lower bronze level dancers there - everyone else was doing more advanced stuff. The floor was smaller than our regular rink, and we have seldom had a chance to skate as a team in any other rinks. One thing that could have been better: apparently Dominic takes some time off after Nationals, so we didn't get to skate to live organ music. ==== Glendora/LA Metro, CA 91740-5425 Roller City 945 Bonita Avenue Glendora is in Southern California, at the eastern edge of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Mostly people are pretty cool but you have your little cliques or exclusive type crowds of kids - "locals" that are jerks sometimes because a lot of them are little rich kids. Northridge is a fairly exclusive area, mostly upper middle class to very well off. For the most part it is a good place to skate. A lot of famous/movie and TV star kids skate there, as well as at some of the other local rinks in the San Fernando valley area. [ web gleanings ] The Serman Square rink had a lot of gang related problems in the early 90's. Their adult night became popular with youth gang members and gradually turned in to a gang night and drive-by. Most of the gang members were happy to have a social skate, but there were too many confrontations between rival gangs, loitering non-skaters and also fighting, drinking, and drug dealing problems in the parking lot. The rink eventually discontinued all public sessions and is now only available for rentals, parties and roller hockey league play.
