It is advertised as the biggest rink in Briton but I would guess that it is eclipsed by most of the rinks in the US. Great place for young and old alike very friendly crowd - A lot of families skate there. The UK figure skating championships are held there, they have groups visiting from all over Europe and also arrange for a team to skate in the local Summer Carnivals. Its Management is top Class which enables all sorts of groups to visit from handicapped children/families/trendy teenagers right up to us oldies. The rink is run with a night club atmosphere with a bar and state of the art disco lights - Disco music and games during all sessions. Stewards keep order on the ring and a disc jockey runs each session. Colcester has three roller hockey teams in the local league, although we have just joined and have a long way to go before we start to win! ==== Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, UK Roller City at Campus West 01707 332880 ==== Letchworth, Hertfordshire, UK North Herts Leisure Centre Baldock Road 01462 679311 ==== Bushey, Hertfordshire, UK Hartspring Sports & Leisure Centre 01923 233039 ==== ?, Hertfordshire, UK Nicholas Hawskmoor Centre 0181 953 8267 ======================================================================== Japan ==== Tokyo, Japan Korakuen [ pyz@panix.com (Max Pyziur) ] I spent a summer in Tokyo a while back; I took my skates with me in the event I'd find a place to unwind on weekends. It was located on the 4th floor of an amusement part known as Korakuen, just next to the 'Big Egg' stadium. Interesting setup; it ran from noon to midnight, generally played disco music. The crowd in terms of styles was very mixed; some had a roller derby style, some a disco one; schoolgirls, regular denizens all skating at the same time; some in time to the music, others not. ======================================================================== Hong Kong ==== I don't have any exact information on rink locations, but the Hong Kong goverment's recreation page indicates that the urban council maintains some 17 roller rinks, and the district council 23 more. I suspect that these are almost all outdoor rinks, Hong Kong has no real winter, just rainy and muggy seasons. The "Holiday Camps" at the Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Centre, the Lady MacLehose Holiday Village and the Tso Kung Tam Outdoor Recreation Centre are specifically mentioned as having roller rinks, in addition to the Ocean Park theme park in Aberdeen. See http://www.info.gov.hk/info/recre.htm for some general information. ==== Aberdeen, Hong Kong Ocean Park 852-28738888/852/28736825(fax) IAPAA Member Ocean Park is a fairly large municpally owned theme/recreation park located in Aberdeen, new Hong Kong. In addition to a roller skating rink of some kind, it incudes rides, an aquariaum, water slides and swimming and cultural exhibits. See http://www.info.gov.hk/info/recre.htm for a detailed description of the parks attractions and events. ======================================================================== Philipines ==== I'm told that roller skating is a popular recreation in the Philipines, but when I was there on business I couldn't find any rinks listed in the Metro-Manila phone book. I'm not sure if it's something thats more popular in the outlying towns, or the venues are stadiums or recreation centers that wouldn't be listed specifically as rinks. ======================================================================== The Netherlands ==== Den Haag, Holland Skate Center Aads Place De Uithof Jaap Edenweg 10 [ kger@luna.nl (The Runaway) ] Now open every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon in Holland. [ not really sure if this is a rink or more of a extreme skate park ] ======================================================================== Germany ==== Essen, Germany Gruga Park Plastic Over Concrete - 30m x 60m Outdoor [ kai@eclipse.asta.uni-essen.de (Kai Schulte) - edited ] Our rink in Gruga Park is full size (30m by 60m) open air rink, concrete with a new transparent plastic coating.
