I don't have any experience with the National or International events, but usually attending as a spectator is a fairly casual thing, walk up, pay the admission and find a seat or good place to stand and watch. There is usually a program available and a smattering of skating supply vendors. It's common to have the skaters, and coaches mingling in the crowd except when they're perparing to compete. The quality of the skating varies a lot, especially at the lower levels, but if you're patient you'll always get some "wow's" in. Make a point of relaxing and wandering around, rather than trying to "watch everything" and you'll be more receptive when some high-level events show up in the schedule. [ From: small@ll.mit.edu (Chet Small C-463 X4172) ] Artistic (ART) skating which includes freestyle, pairs, dance and figures is generally done on quad skates; while speed and hockey skating is generally done on inline skates. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = USAC/RS has a beginner program for skaters of all ages to encourage new participants. The program is called the Junior Olympic program and abbreviated as JO. The top placements in the regions qualify to skate the national JO championship. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = The following is a list of the upcoming USAC/RS regional roller skating championships. For competitions the country is divided into nine regions. At this point it should be pretty much final, though some events can gain or loose a day depending on the number of entrants. Larry Lawson's url: http://www.europa.com/~llawson/roller.htm The ultimate source for such information is the USAC/RS magazine US Skating News or hopefully someday the official USAC/RS web page. Remember that Junior Olympics or "JO" events are basically a separate track for skaters that are still in their first or second competitive season, without regard to age. The senior events are broken down into various age/ability categories. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Southern Regional Championships Senior Events: June 17-20, 1996 Junior Olympic: June 21-22, 1996 Pensacola Civic Center 201 East Gregory Street Pensacola, FL 32501 904-432-0900 Great Lakes Regional Championships Senior Events: June 22-28, 1996 Junior Olympic: June 27, 28 1996 Skatin' Station 8611 Ronda Drive Canton, MI 48187 313-459-6401 Northwest Regional Championships Senior Events: June 23-25, 1996 Junior Olympic: June 25,26 1996 Oaks Park Skating Rink Oaks Park Portland, OR 97214 503-236-5722 Southeast Regional Championships Senior Events: June 22-24, 1996 Junior Olympic: June 25, 26 1996 Hugo's Skateland US Route 17 Bealeton, VA 22712 540-439-8814 North Central Regional Championships Senior Events: June 25-29, 1996 Junior Olympic: June 25, 1996 Pershing Municipal Auditorium 226 Centennial Mall South Lincoln, NE 68508 402-441-7500 South Central Regional Championships Senior Events: June 26-28, 1996 Junior Olympic: June 29-30 1996 Will Rogers Coliseum 1 Amon Carter Square Fort Worth, TX 76107 817-871-8150 Northeast Regional Championships Senior Events: June 29 - July 2, 1996 Junior Olympic: July 3,4 1996 Skate Palace 110 South Main Street Milford, MA 01757 508-473-611 Southwest Regional Championships Senior Events: June 29 - July 5, 1996 Junior Olympic: July 6-7, 1996 Bakersfield Convention Center 1001 Truxtun Avenue Bakersfield, CA 93301 805-327-7553 Eastern Regional Championships Senior Events: July 4-7, 1996 Junior Olympic: July 7, 1996 Holiday Skating Center 1775 Creek Road Delanco, NJ 08075 609-461-3770 National Championships Senior Events: August 1-10, 1996 Junior Olympic: August 11-14, 1996 Pershing Municipal Auditorium 226 Centennial Mall South Lincoln, NE 68508 402-441-7500 ======================================================================== Copyright Notice: This material is Copyright 1994-1996 by George Robbins.
