DIY Remote trigger for Nikon F3

Recently I found myself in need of taking a photograph from about 20 feet away from the camera. I have a Nikon F3 with the MD-4, which is a nice camera and I know Nikon makes a remote trigger for it, but I also know that by shorting out the two contacts at the very bottom of the MD-4 you can cause the shutter to trip, and the process of doing this is so absurdly simple that it would be far easer to make a trigger of my own than even consider calling B&H and ordering one -- that's not even taking into consideration that I'm sure Nikon's trigger release is an expensive piece of equipment. Luckily I live right by a Radio Shack.

Components:

Total cost, around $2.00 depending on the length of the wire.

Instructions:

  1. Attach the two allegator clips to one end of the wire, and your button-switch to the other end so that when you depress the button, contact is made.
  2. Cut the non-conductive material so that it fits between the two prongs on the MD-4's remote release, this will keep the allegator clips from touching and firing the motor drive helter skelter. Insert the non-conductive material between the two prongs and attach the allegator clips.
  3. Tape the wire down to the camera body, don't put tension on the wire.

That's it.

When you're done, it should look like this:

Put it on a tripod, shoot yourself silly.
