Catherwood's Guide to Reality -- Part I -- Trying it Out sirwill1@netaxs.com Connecting: You hop on the Internet and telnet to tinycwru.tinymush.org 4201. This will take you to a welcome screen on the CwruMUSH. You'll be using an established character, so the first thing to do, before logging in, is to make sure that someone else isn't already using it. Type WHO in all upper case. The MUSH will list the names of the characters that are already logged in. If you see Regnad among them, please try again later. If Regnad is not in use, type connect Regnad Kcin. The K in Kcin must be a cap and the rest lower case since this is a case sensitive password. You should find yourself on the Antelope Freeway. If you're not there, type the word home and you'll be taken there instantly. You move by typing the name of an exit. I've given mine shorthand notations. You should see, when on the Freeway, the following: Obvious exits: Bus Stop You can simply type BS to go to the Bus Stop. Type look to look at objects, for instance, at the Bus Stop, type look mailbox. You can abbreviate look to l, and you can shorten the names of objects to a point where the MUSH can discriminate between similarly named objects, i.e., at the Bus Stop you can type l m to look at the mailbox. If There were also a mailman in the object list, you'd have to type l mailb or l mailm to reach a point where the strings identify a specific object. Whe you enter any new place or room, you see the description upon entry. If it scrolls off the screen, you can see it again by typing just look, or l. My personal technique for room descriptions is to capitalize the names of other objects you can look at. For instance, if you see the sentence "There is a TABLE in one corner." you should type look table to get a description of the table. Among the verbs recognized by the MUSH are look, take (or get), drop, give, use, enter and leave. We've already discussed look. If you type take (or get) , you actually pick it up and add it to your own inventory if its owner permits it to be picked up by another player. You'll normally get a message telling you whether the object was taken successfully. You can list the objects you're carrying at any time by typing inventory, or just inv. Drop makes your character drop the object. It is removed from your inventory and might now be on the floor of the room you're in, however there's no guarantee that it will be where you left it. Objects can be programmed, by their owners, to take certain actions after they are dropped or used or even looked at. Give = causes you to take an item from your inventory and give it to another character. In order for this to work, the other character must be set enter_ok. More on this later. Use triggers actions that have been programmed into the object itself. If the object has not been programmed for use you'll get a message saying that you can't figure out how to use it. Enter places you inside an object and leave gets you out. This is normally used for vehicles and, who knows, by the time you've read this there might even be a bus at that bus stop. As I write, I'm undecided between a Blue Bus, a Magic Bus, or a Tour Bus. In order for enter to work, the object must be set enter_ok. The mailbox is set enter_ok so you can crawl into it if you want to and leave me a note. There's a mail system on the MUSH itself, there's also email, but I do check my, um, that is, *Mrs. Haber's* mail from time to time. Enter and leave are not used to go from room to room - to do that you navigate using the names of the exits. I've added some user defined commands. I leave it to you to attempt to use them intuitively as you play. You'll sometimes see help in the form of a sentence which contains enclosed in like . Those are words that you can type in that particular situation to make things happen, i.e., unlock locked doors, free up objects that you can't pick up yet, etc. Well, I've rambled enough here. You must be getting hungry. I hear Nick's serves a decent slice! Oh, one last thing. When you're done using Regnad as a character, please type home, followed by QUIT. Note QUIT must be all caps And then, if you've enjoyed yourself, perhaps you'll want to build your own character. Read CGR2.TXT for some advice. Now, forward, into the....... Wait! Didn't I say that on the other side of the record?
